Cala Jondal. Photo c/o Ibiza Maps

Ralph Moore has been a regular man-about-town in Ibiza every Summer for years. When he’s not busy as the editor of Mixmag, or managing the prolific Tensnake, you can find him cruising around the island and hanging out at all the best parties, beaches and places to chill. As the season kicks off, we asked him to share his top spots for our Summer guide to Ibiza. Follow him on Twitter @ralphmooreus.

WHERE TO STAY

Personally, I tend to stay on Talamanca Beach and there are two main options here (as it’s so close to Pacha):

Hostal Talamanca
Playa Talamanca, Aptdo. 103, 07800 Ibiza | www.hostaltalamanca.com
Around 100 a night, also comes with breakfast.

Ocean Drive
Playa de Talamanca, APT. 223 E, 07800 Ibiza | www.od-hotels.com
Around the corner, great staff and good food. Prices online.

Pacha Hotel
Av. 8 de Agosto, s/n (frente Pacha) 07800 Ibiza | www.elhotelpacha.com
In addition, if you’re looking to spend a little more and be right opposite the club, the Pacha Hotel is a great 4 star option, but it can get expensive in peak season.

La Barraca. Photo c/o Amnesia Magazine

WHERE TO EAT

So many great places! Here are 5 to kick off with:

1. Talamanca Club
Playa de Talamanca, 07800 Ibiza | No website
Fantastic pizzas, seafood pasta and salads with shade and a great view of Talamanca beach – good value but be warned, the service can be slow!

2. La Barraca
Carretera de Sen Feixes, 07800 Ibiza | No Website
Built in a finca that’s 150 years old, La Barraca is known for it’s meat and grill dishes. This place is incredible – easily one of the best on the island.

3. Tropicana Beach Club, Cala Jondal
Cala Jondal Beach, Sant Josep de Sa Talaia, Ibiza | www.tropicanaibiza.com
Tropicana is right on the beach and great for freshly cooked seafood and BBQ. Go with a bunch of friends and lose the day in style!

4. Sa Capella
Carretera Sant Antoni-Santa Agnés, Km 1 07820 Ibiza | No Website
Sa Capella is near San Antonio, but don’t let that put you off! Amazing home-cooked Spanish food in a converted old church. Not cheap, but a great unique vibe.

5. Cipriani’s
Ibiza Gran Hotel Paseo Juan Carlos I, nr. 17, 07800 Ibiza | www.cipriani.com
Cipriani’s is new to the island, and they have impeccable fish and meat with a great wine selection backed up by fantastic service and a cool outdoor feel. Take your credit card!

WHERE TO DRINK

For the best places for drinks, head into the Old Town for amazing views and pure Spanish air. Further down in the port, head to The Rock Bar (Calle Cipriano Garijo, 14, 07800 Ibiza) for great mojitos, beers and brilliant people watching! There are plenty of other bars along the strip if The Rock is too busy to get a seat. Up in Dalt Vila, it’s great to sit under the stars at Red Bar (Sa Carossa, 4, Dalt Vila) which is probably the best high view on the island.

BEST BEACH

I like Cala Jondal for the authentic Ibiza beach vibe (and it’s super hippy!). It all depends where your hotel is, but this place is worth jumping in a cab to visit as this is the by far the best beach.

Pacha. Photo c/o Ibiza Traveller

BEST CLUBS

For Sven Vath, Ricardo Villalobos and special house and techno guests like Seth Troxler and Carl Craig, Cocoon on a Monday at Amnesia can’t be beat.

Also on Mondays, check out Circo Loco at DC10 for the ravers.

Space on a Tuesday for Carl Cox and friends and We Love at Space on Sundays with James Zabiela, Ame, Dixon et al….

Also look at Sankeys on Tuesdays for Diynamic with Solomun and David August, plus weekly parties from Steve Lawler and Sasha.

Richie Hawtin continues the techno vibe with ENTER every Thursday over the road at Space.

Plus Hot Natured at DC10 every Thursday for Jamie Jones and crew.

For open-air daytime parties, go to Ushuaia for one of the many weekly parties on offer – this year Pete Tong takes over Fridays with a new festival-style party that starts early and features DJs and live electronic acts alike, with Pete at the helm.

On Sundays, catch Solomun +1 at Pacha with special guests playing a dance floor in the middle of the club for the first time… guests at +1 include Tensnake, Dennis Ferrer and Miss Kittin.

Finally, wait until Bomba, the new club that was previously Heaven, announces their line-ups. Defected, Subliminal and Luciano are all expected to announce details this month.

Modular has always been a record label after our own heart. Great music, laid back vibes, impeccable style. Plus they always know how to throw a party and keep it classy. That’s why we are very excited to hear that Modular will present it’s first Croatian music festival on the spectacular island of Hvar, Croatia next month. For Festival will take place June 21-23 and pretty much embodies the Cliktrips lifestyle. For is keeping it intimate (only 2000 tickets) and allowing plenty of time for lounging in the sun, swimming in the Adriatic Sea and sailing around the islands by day, before starting the beach party later in the afternoon and upping the energy heading into the wee hours of the night. The line up includes a great mix of artists like Tame Impala, Solange, Nicolas Jaar, Tensnake, Canyons, Horse Meat Disco, James Murphy, James Blake, Bag Raiders and more.

For more information and tickets to For Festival visit forfestival2013.com

WHAT TO DO IN HVAR

And if you need any more reasons to attend For Festival, Stephen Pavlovic, owner/founder of Modular and Tanja Gacic of My Empirical Life have shared their Top 5 tips for Hvar:

1. Rent anything from a small motorized boat (you don’t need a licence for these) to a fancy yacht and sail around the Pakleni Islands. This set of 20 or so islands are one of Croatia’s most famous nautical destinations with pine forests, pebble beaches and azure seas. Rarely rough or dangerous water conditions make this a fun and adventurous day excursion with many places to visit – check out Jerolim, Zdrilca, Stipanska or Palmizana for some great beaches, awesome restaurants and cute outdoor bars. Best of all you can visit some of For Festival’s venues like a true pirate in around 10 minutes from Hvar town – Carpe Diem Beach sits on one of these small islands as does Ammo Beach Bar.

2. Carpe Diem Beach – This venue is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful clubs in the world. Monopolizing the entire small island of Stipanska, Carpe Diem boasts an outdoor dancefloor in an olive grove, luxurious day beds running down to crystal clear waters, BBQs on the beach and amazing DJ acts. www.carpe-diem-beach.com

3. Have a spa treatment in a cabana by the sea, stretch out with morning yoga under the old pines or simply rent a daybed or sunbed followed by a few cocktails at Bonj “les bains” beach club. This gorgeous “bathouse” is part of Hotel Amfora, but anyone can pay to visit and enjoy some sun and the Adriatic Sea in total luxury.

4. Visit the local markets and stock up on artisan bread, Dalmatian prosciutto, the famous Croatian Paski cheese, fresh figs, olive oil, nougat and wine such as the Mali Plavac, and hop on a rented scooter and visit some of Hvar’s popular beaches: Dubovica, Sveti Nedelja, Milna or Zarace for a fun (and utterly delicious!) take on a summer picnic.

5. Take a sunset stroll around the 700 year old stone town of Hvar (Croats used to call it For, hence the name of the festival), trek to the old fort, then pick up some lavender souvenirs (the island is known for it’s lavender fields) and grab a bite at a wide variety of authentic Croatian restaurants. Bite into yummy local cheese, cured meats, salted sardined and local tipple in an authentic rustic setting at the Konoba Manego situated up the steep stone steps in the old town for a late afternoon chillout session. If lobster linguini or truffle gnocchi is more your thing visit one of our favorites Luna restaurant; but if you fancy a peasant stew called gregada with sea bass, potatoes, onion and wine simmered to perfection visit Macondo situated in a narrow alley over the main square or Lucullus where everything is delicious. Yaksa is a place to see and be seen featuring a modern take on classic Croatian food; Paradise Found serves great seafood pasta and fish platters; and Zlatna Skoljka is an authentic slow food restaurant serving delicious Croatian fare with a twist. Panorama restaurant is just up from Hvar town and offers great views of the island and roast lamb.

If you really want an authentic, unforgettable experience and unsurpassed views of the whole of Hvar, try to find Konoba Humac–what this semi-abandoned shepard settlement lacks in electricity, it more than makes up for in coal fire. Order lamb, veal, goat or octopus a day ahead, then arrive when the meal is nearly cooked, settle back with some home made wine or a selection of liqueurs and wait for some roasted perfection while watching Hvar’s golden sunset. Try the octopus which is prepared under the peka with wine and herbs – it is a traditional form of cooking where food is placed under a steel bell that is heaped with burning coals, then cooked for hours for unbelievable tenderness.

Things change with the wind in the desert cities – places open, places close, places move, and as Weekend 2 of Coachella approaches, we thought it was due time for a refresh of the “Top Thrift Stores in the Desert.”

Once again, pro-thrifter Celeste Tabora has curated a list of her top stops for finding vintage gems in the desert close to the festival site. So if you are lamenting missing a bunch of parties from Coachella 2013 Weekend 1 – Keep calm and go thrifting!

1. Resale Therapy
67800 E Palm Canyon Dr, Cathedral City, CA 92234 | www.shopresaletherapy.com
Don’t go shopping on their website, as that will surely prevent you from even being interested in going. Instead, go to the shop! I found many a designer item! Some items are expensive, it’s true – but they have great things on sale and a “nothing over $10 section.” So, if you’re into classic pieces and have a collection of la crème de la crème of labels you want to add to, this seems to be the place. I have been in the market for an ’80s era Lanvin monogram cross-body purse for about a year now, and I found it here and it was half off! This well-curated shop is en route from Palm Springs to the festival grounds right on 111 – so plan for a pit stop!

2. American Cancer Society Discovery Shop
42446 Bob Hope Dr – Rancho Mirage, CA | www.discoveryshop-ranchomirage.org
Your chances of finding some good ol’ vintage vinyl and furnishings here are great! Clothing is so-so.

3. NU4U Thrift Store
69550 Hwy 111, Rancho Mirage | Website
Worth a visit, but I make no promises of finding your best Coachella outfit to date here. Mostly furniture and accessories for someone with a good imagination and budding stylists.

4. Deja Vu Vintage Finery
664 N. Palm Canyon Dr. Palm Springs, Ca | www.dejavuvintagefinery.blogspot.com
This place totally understands the desert clothing vibe. Ladies – if your wardrobe is lacking, give this place a visit.

This place is great for mid-century furniture, but I can never tell when to go or when they’re open or where they’re going to be! Gypsyland is not just a name it seems. Follow this nomadic shop on Facebook and look at their last posts and see if you can catch them!

72750 Dinah Shore Dr, Palm Desert, CA - This location is right off the freeway.
68401 Highway 111, Cathedral City, CA - This one is off of Hwy 111, the main desert drag.
611 South Palm Canyon Drive, Palm Springs - This one is in Palm Springs and most likely picked over.

Norma’s at The Parker

The Coachella Music Valley and Arts Festival kicks off next weekend in the Coachella Valley in California. For the second year in a row, this massive festival will take place over two weekends (April 12-14 and April 19-21) bringing thousands of music fans and party people to the area. Many festival goers and artists playing the festival have decided to make an extended vacation out of it and stay in the desert all week. If you are one of lucky ones who will be chilling under the desert sky, we’ve put together a short list of where to eat and drink in Palm Springs, Indio, La Quinta and all areas in between. Special thanks to our California-esque friends Marisa Brickman, Oli Isaacs, Mandy Brooks, Celeste Tabora, Anne Lee, Greg Bresnitz and Jill Bradshaw for their tips!

BREAKFAST & BRUNCH

Norma’s at The Parker
4200 East Palm Canyon Drive, Palm Springs, CA 92264 | www.theparkerpalmsprings.com
Brunch at Norma’s is like a big deal out here, and it’s not the type of place you should drag your hungover buddies if they are still wearing last nights clothes. Tucked in The Parker hotel, this classy brunch features all your favorites gussied up like rock lobster omelettes, foie gras french toast, and “Chunks of Lobster Swimming in Cheesy Macaroni.” So pull yourself together, order a chilled glass of prosecco and enjoy the scenery.

Cheeky’s
622 N. Palm Canyon, Palm Springs, CA 92262 | www.cheekysps.com
Cheeky’s is one of those glorious places that serves breakfast all day (but they are only open Wed-Mon from 8am-2pm). This casual eatery serves up a mix of healthy choices and traditional breakfast and lunch items all sourced locally and organic whenever possible. They also have something called “A Bacon Flight” on the menu and you can try five different types of bacon for $4!

Elmer’s
1030 E. Palm Canyon Drive, Palm Springs, CA 92264 | www.eatatelmers.com
Yes, Elmer’s is part of a chain, but it’s more like a Jim’s in Texas than a nasty Denny’s. Come here for breakfast and cozy up in a booth, drink bottomless coffee, and enjoy your over sized breakfast of pancakes, omelettes, country biscuits, chicken fried steak and hash browns.

Palm Greens Cafe photo c/o Palm Springs Life

HEALTHY

Palm Greens Cafe
611 S. Palm Canyon Drive, Palm Springs, CA 92264 | www.palmgreenscafe.com
Our “healthy” LA friends suggested Palm Greens Cafe because of all their veggie, vegan and all around good for you menu items. They also serve plenty of organic, locally sourced meats, poultry and fish dishes, so it’s not just for vegetarians. This is a good place to re-up (or gear up) after a long weekend of partying at Coachella.

The Natural Sisters Cafe
61695 29 Palms Hwy Suite B, Joshua Tree, CA 92252 | No website
Joshua Tree is a bit far from the Coachella grounds, but if you’re spending an extra day or two in the desert or need a place to stop on your way back to Los Angeles, The Natural Sisters Cafe is a great place to check out. The menu is all vegetarian and vegan and they serve a nice selection of smoothies, salads and wraps. Plus they make their own kombucha!

King’s Highway at the Ace Hotel

AMERICAN & TRADITIONAL

King’s Highway at the Ace Hotel
701 E. Palm Canyon Drive, Palm Springs, CA 92264 | www.acehotel.com/palmsprings
King’s Highway is the kitschy diner attached to the very cool Ace Hotel. The vintage decor and lofty design lend a fun and retro feel to the place, but the menu is pretty straight ahead modern American. Lots of farm to table, locally sourced and organic items pepper the menu of salads, sandwiches, small plates and entrees. Bonus: they serve Stumptown coffee!

Jackalope Ranch
80400 Highway 111, Indio, CA 92201 | www.thejackaloperanch.com
Jackalope Ranch is a large restaurant on a six acre ranch located close to the Coachella grounds. It’s perfect for large groups and they serve a mix of “California Ranch Style BBQ” (ribs, chicken) and California style Mexican cuisine (tacos, nachos, tamales) alongside giant salads, sandwiches and upscale bar food.

Woody’s Burgers
317 N. Indian Canyon Drive, Palm Springs CA 92262 | www.woodysburgersps.com
Woody’s doesn’t look like much from the outside (or inside really) because it used to be an old Greyhound bus station, but the burgers, fries and shakes are top notch. Our favorite is the Blue Burger topped with blue cheese AND blue cheese sauce, but any of their gourmet burgers are just as good. Cold beer, cocktails and the occasional lounge singer make this place something special.

Murph’s Gaslight Restaurant
79-860 Avenue 42, Bermuda Dunes, CA 92203 | www.murphsgaslight.com
Murph’s is famous for their pan fried chicken. It’s served family style with a side of mashed potatoes, gravy and all the fixin’s. On Sundays it’s ALL they serve. Don’t bother with the rest of the menu.

El Gallito photo c/o The Anglophile

MEXICAN

El Gallito
68820 Grove St, Cathedral City, CA 92234 | www.elgallito.menutoeat.com
There are a lot of Mexican places to eat in the area, but El Gallito is our favorite. It’s a mom and pop style, hole in the wall Mexican joint that looks completely out of place next to the rest of the strips malls in this desert brown landscape. The food is cheap, tasty, filling and the combination plates are under $10. The tacky decor seems to make the food taste better too.

Adobe Grill at La Quinta Resort & Club
49-499 Eisenhower Drive, La Quinta, CA 92253 | www.laquintaresort.com
Located in the La Quinta Resort, Adobe is a more of an upscale, Mexican dining experience. Perfect if you’re in the mood for table side guacamole, award winning tamales and top shelf margaritas. They also offer over 100 types of tequila!

Las Casuelas
222 S. Palm Canyon Drive, Palm Springs, CA 92262 | www.lascasuelas.com
Las Casuelas is an old school staple in Palm Springs. Located on the main drag, Las Casuelas is a big, open air Mexican restaurant with a palapa bar serving all kinds of giant margaritas and a huge array of tequilas from their “Tequila Hall of Fame” list. There’s is the occasional live band playing Mexican versions of cover songs, but it actually works with the vibe. Good for groups too.

Citron at the Viceroy

UPSCALE DINING

Citron at the Viceroy
415 South Belardo Road, Palm Springs, CA 92262 | www.viceroyhotelsandresorts.com
Located in the luxe Viceroy resort, Citron is a good spot for a romantic dinner by the pool at night or a casual business meeting during the day. Citron offers a modern twist on classic, gourmet dining in the desert with an extensive wine list and a seasonal menu. The lunch menu includes fish tacos and the Viceroy burger, and for dinner try the lime marinated seafood salad, Mediterranean lamb or steak frites with truffle butter.

TRIO
707 N Palm Canyon Dr Palm Springs, CA 92262 | www.triopalmsprings.com
Self-described as an “energetic desert-casual atmosphere,” Trio is popular with the locals in Palm Springs. They serve a mix of creative comfort food and American modern dishes like country pate, crawfish pot pie, roasted half chicken and Yankee pot roast. Great wine and cocktail list too.

OLD SCHOOL PALM SPRINGS

Melvyn’s at the Ingleside Inn
200 West Ramon Road, Palm Springs, CA 92264 | www.inglesideinn.com
Melvyn’s has been called “One of the 10 Best…” according to Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous. Ten best what, you ask? Who knows, but that’s why this place is awesome. Great old school Palm Springs vibes and they even have a page on their website dedicated to the celebrities who have been spotted at Melvyn’s. Champagne brunch on Saturday and Sundays!

Wally’s Desert Turtle
71-775 Highway 111, Rancho Mirage, CA 92270 | www.wallys-desert-turtle.com
The over the top 80′s fancy restaurant decor is the best part about this restaurant. Don your best “desert casual” duds and order a bottle of French champagne and enjoy your escargot, ceasar salad and roasted rack of lamb in true 80′s rich guy style!

ASIAN & INDIAN

Legacy Thai
46520 Washington St. Suite 3, La Quinta, CA 92253 | No website
Casual, easy, tasty. Dine in or take out.

India Oven
35875 Date Palm Drive D-8 Cathedral City, CA 92234 | www.india-oven.com
Surprisingly good Indian food in the desert!

DIVE BARS

Neil’s Lounge
80956 US Hwy 111, Indio, CA 92201 | No website
Great dive bar with karaoke that has been around forever.

The Beer Hunter
78-483 Hwy 111, La Quinta, CA 92253 | www.laquintabeerhunter.com
The greatest sports bar ever?

Pappy & Harriet’s
53688 Pioneertown Road, Pioneertown, CA 92268 | www.pappyandharriets.com
A well loved dive bar and restaurant set in the old Wild West of Pioneertown. Many of the bands playing Coachella are also playing shows here mid-week, so check their calendar!

It’s time once again for our annual guide of where to eat and drink in Miami during Winter Music Conference and Ultra Music Festival week(s), dance music’s annual pilgrimage to this beautiful, tropical city by the sea. Expect plenty of late night and all day dance parties with top notch DJs mixed with some serious sun lounging by the pool.

This year, we updated our list with a little help from legendary producer, DJ and Miami lover/almost local, Arthur Baker. Last year, we bumped into him at our favorite eateries, so we decided to go straight to the source this year, and ask for his Top 5 picks. Scroll down to see our full list of places to eat and drink all week too!

Arthur Baker’s Miami Picks:

Yardbirds
1600 Lenox Ave | www.runchickenrun.com
Yardbirds brings Southern style, comfort food to South Beach. This place serves a farm fresh menu of seasonal veggies, fried chicken, biscuits, shrimp and grits and lots of other tasty choices. They also have a full bar with bourbon, cocktails, beer and wine. Arthur suggests the brick chicken.

Michael’s Genuine
130 NE 40th St. | www.michaelsgenuine.com/miami
Michael’s Genuine is highly recommend for their brunch. The menu features oysters, shepherd’s pie, breakfast pizza with house smoked bacon and Florida shrimp and grits. This place is big on the whole slow food movement and supporting local farmers, and their farm to table philosophy really comes through in their dishes. The menu is always based on what’s in season and is constantly changing, so check the site or call ahead for today’s specials.

Scarpetta at Fontainebleau
4441 Collins Ave | www.fontainebleau.com
Scarpetta is a fine dining Italian restaurant in the Fontainbleau Hotel on the beach. They serve a great mix of Italian classics with a modern, seasonal twist, and all of their pastas are made in house. Arthur recommends the chef’s tasting menu.

Photo c/o Pubbelly

Pubbelly Sushi
1424 20th St. | www.pubbellysushi.com
Pubbelly Sushi serves up a daily and seasonal selection of sushi, sashimi and Japanese inspired snacks in a relaxed pub setting. Snacks include tostones con ceviche, hamachi with jalapeno, and New England style rolls like Maine lobster with yuzu and celery. Also try the original Pubbelly next store (1418 20th St) which is an Asian-inspired gastropub with dishes like fried chicken with kimchi, steak frites with shiso bearnaise, duck and pumpkin dumplings and udon carbonara.

Las Vacas Gordas
933 Normandy Drive | www.lasvacasgordas.com
This is a proper Argentine eatery in Miami with lots of traditional grilled delicacies on the menu including steaks, blood sausage, chorizo, provoleta (grilled provolone) and grilled chicken. Arthur recommends the enrollada (skirt steak).

OUR MIAMI PICKS

Versailles
3555 SW 8th St. | www.versaillesrestaurant.com
Versailles is an old school, Cuban restaurant in Little Havana. Don’t let their tagline “The World’s Most Famous Cuban Restaurant” scare you. The food is great, the portions are huge and the atmosphere is fun. It kind of feels like you’re at a banquet hall with etched mirrored walls and lots of older Cuban ladies wearing sequined blouses. Bonus: A scene from Scarface was filmed here.

La Caretta
3632 SW 8th St. | www.lacarreta.com
Another established Cuban restaurant with several locations throughout Miami, including the airport. We’ve only been to the location on SW 8th Street (across from Versailles), and the food was just as delicious, if not better than Versailles!

Puerto Sagua
700 Collins Ave | No Website
Puerto Sagua is another old school Cuban restaurant, but this one is located right off the beach in Miami. It’s a no-frills, diner style place that stays open late and serves all your favorite Cuban classics like cubanos and chicken with yellow rice.

Lido Restaurant & Bayside Grill at The Standard Hotel
40 Island Ave. | www.standardhotels.com/miami
We love the outdoor Bayside Grill at The Standard. It’s a perfect place to chill on the dock and have a drink for happy hour at sunset, or come early for a sunny lunch by the sea. Since the hotel is also a spa expect to find a lot of light and healthy salads, appetizers, fresh sandwiches, fish and chicken dishes. They also serve tasty burgers, fries and steaks for those of you who aren’t trying to detox. Afterwards, you can take a dip in their stunning infinity pool.

Andiamo Pizza
5600 Biscayne Blvd. | www.andiamopizzamiami.com
We live in New York City where we have some of the best pizza in the world, but we will go on record as saying Andiamo is very, very good. We love the Vesuvio pizza with salami, hot and sweet peppers and the Capricciosa with ham and artichokes. It’s located close to the Design District, so it’s a nice change of pace from the beach and they have lots of outdoor seating.

La Sandwicherie
229 14th St. | www.lasandwicherie.com
This place has been serving up delicious sandwiches and smoothies since 1998. They are open until 5am every night, so it’s also a favorite spot for late night party goers on South Beach. It gets great reviews everywhere and for good reason. Try the pate sandwich!

Shake Shack
1111 Lincoln Rd. | www.shakeshack.com
Yep, the same one they have in New York, although surprisingly with less lines! Great burgers, shakes and fries. For those of you who have never been to Shake Shack, do yourself a favor and order a double cheeseburger and fries.

Toni’s Sushi
1208 Washington Ave | www.tonisushi.com
We came here years ago when we first started coming to Miami, and we always try to go back whenever we visit. Toni’s is a low-key, Japanese spot serving super fresh sushi and traditional dishes. It’s unassuming from the outside, but the vibe inside is super chill and they have semi-private booths along the sides of the restaurant that are cool for groups.

Garcia’s Seafood Grille & Fish Market
398 NW North River Drive | www.garciasmiami.com
Garcia’s gets their fish delivered fresh to their dockside restaurant everyday, so you know it’s always fresh and tasty. Plus it’s got a nice, chill vibe with outdoor wooden picnic tables along the Miami River where you can have a beer and enjoy your fried fish sandwich, seafood chowder and house specialties.

El Palacio De Los Jugos
5721 W Flagler St | No Website
A popular and well-known spot for fresh squeezed juices and cheap and filling Cuban food.

Mac’s Club Duece Bar
222 14th St. | No Website
Classic (and one of the last) South Beach dive bars. A must stop!

The Room
100 Collins Ave | www.theroommiamibeach.com
Small, chill and intimate bar in South Beach with a large craft beer and wine selection.

It’s time for our annual list of the best places to eat and drink in Austin during SXSW! Austin’s food scene has been continually growing (up) and changing over the past few years, and has expanded past the traditional “BBQ and tacos” mentality that a lot of visitors still focus on when they visit the city. Don’t worry, you can still get great BBQ and tacos in Austin, but this year we’ve mixed up the list with some of the new, internationally inspired restaurants like Elizabeth Street Cafe and Ramen Tatsu-ya along with some of our Austin favorites like The Hula Hut and Shady Grove. Scroll down to the bottom for some great places for drinks too!

If food carts are more your thing, check out the excellent site austinfoodcarts.com. And to plan your schedule and RSVP to more parties than you can possible attend, cruise on over to sxsw.ohmyrockness.com.

Special thanks to our buddy and local Austinite, Ian Orth of Orthy for his tips!

Elizabeth Street Cafe
1501 S 1st St | www.elizabethstreetcafe.com
A real deal French Vietnamese cafe serving several varieties of Vietnamese staples like pho and bahn mi sandwiches, plus their own specialties like Elizabeth Street Fried Rice and a pork and shrimp crepe. They also have a bakery on site serving sweet treats and Stumptown coffee to go.

Sway
1417 S 1st St | www.swayaustin.com
Upscale Thai food served in a modern, communal setting. Alongside your traditional Thai favorites, they also serve blue crab fried rice, salt and pepper cuttlefish, and fun sounding dishes like “Tiger Cry,” “General Chong’s Quail,” and “Jungle Curry.”

Ramen Tatsu-Ya
8557 Research Blvd | www.ramen-tatsuya.com
This place is Austin’s first authentic ramen spot. It’s dine in only, and they take their enjoyment of ramen very seriously, even providing instructions on “How to best enjoy a Tatsu-ya’s bowl of ramen.” Hint: Chopsticks only!

Perla’s Seafood and Oyster Bar
1400 S Congress Ave | www.perlasaustin.com
A fresh and seasonal seafood and oyster bar conveniently located near all the action (and shopping!) on S. Congress. Stop in for 50 cents off oysters and $2 off cocktails during their weekday happy hours from 3-6pm. Menu changes daily, but it’s pretty much all seafood and of course nice steaks (We are still in Texas people!).

Barley Swine
2024 South Lamar Boulevard | www.barleyswine.com
Barley Swine has been featured on Anthony Bourdain’s No Reservations and recommended by many a foodie friend. The restaurant is named after the chefs’ love of pork and beer, and the menu features local, seasonal ingredients heavy on the pork and meats. It’s a small place with seats along a bar. Good for sharing with two or three good friends if you don’t mind squeezing in!

Hillside Farmacy
1209 E. 11th Street | www.hillsidefarmacy.com
Hillside Farmacy is known for their awesome brunch menu served daily featuring a mix of salads, delicious sandwiches, and specialties like biscuits and gravy, french toast and even a few healthier options. For dinner, ask about the specials (the menu is seasonal), or come for happy hour and share a meat and cheese plate and some oysters. Apparently they also serve made-to-order ice cream sandwiches made with homemade ice cream and cookies!

Photo c/o Easy Tiger

Easy Tiger
709 E. 6th Street | www.easytigeraustin.com
Easy Tiger is a great place to hang out right downtown at the beginning of 6th street. The atmosphere is totally chill and super Austin. Nice, simple interior design and the food and blood marys are insanely good. Split the mixed grill board which is more than enough food for two people. Highly recommended.

Lambert’s
401 W 2nd St | www.lambertsaustin.com
Fancy and delicious BBQ and Southern style cooking in Downtown Austin. Lambert’s serves up tasty treats like deep fried boudin balls, fried green tomatoes with crab salad, jumbo gulf shrimp and grits, half roasted chicken with achiote and lime rub, and more typical BBQ like brisket, pulled pork and pork ribs. Great cocktails and happy hour specials too!

La Condesa
400A West 2nd St | www.lacondesaaustin.com
Upscale, Mexican street food and tequila bar. Great mix of appetizers, ceviches, taquitos and sides. A good place for groups and shared plates.

Hula Hut
3825 Lake Austin Blvd | www.hulahut.com
This giant Polynesian themed, Mexican restaurant is located right on the lake and serves a mix of “Tiki-Mexican” food alongside oddball tropical drinks. Try to get a table outside so you can watch all the turtles swim underneath the dock and check out the weird floating art.

Amaya’s Taco Village
5804 N IH 5 | www.amayastacovillage.com
Awesome family-owned Mexican restaurant serving free chips and salsa, and an endless array of cheap and tasty combination plates served with rice and beans. Take our word for it and order #24: two beef tacos with rice and beans and add a side of guacamole and jalapeños.

Magnolia Cafe
1920 South Congress Ave | www.themagnoliacafe.com
This 24 hour cafe has been featured on numerous cooking and travel shows and serves breakfast all day long and a mix of Tex-Mex, soups, salads, burgers and really good house specials. It’s pretty large and good for groups.

Shady Grove
1624 Barton Springs Road | www.theshadygrove.com
A quirky, casual restaurant with tons of outdoor seating with lots of vintage furniture, old signs and a rustic feel. They are known for their burgers and specials, so that’s a good place to start on the menu.

Taco Cabana
Various Locations | www.tacocabana.com
For late night drunk cravings or to get your fast food drive-thru fix, this is the place. Cheap tacos, fajitas and quesadillas with a killer salsa bar. It’s open 24 hours a day and it’s cheap as hell and good in the middle of the night. Stick with the basics and you’ll be fine. They also serve beer and margaritas!

Midnight Cowboy Modeling
313 E. 6th Street | www.midnightcowboymodeling.com
Midnight Cowboy Modeling is located in the middle of 6th Street. This place is on the serious DL, and it looks nice and shady outside, which is good cause it keeps the riff raff out (you need to enter around back in the alley). This place used to be a legendary Asian rub n’ tug brothel for years and years, and it finally got shut down a few years back. The owner of the Alamo Draft House snatched it up and made it a secret “speakeasy” for the need to know.

The Weather Up
1808 E. Cesar Chavez Street | No website
Located on East Cesar Chavez, The Weather Up has incredible craft cocktails. This place has hired a guy whose main purpose is just to make sure their ice is proper. Seriously… they have a guy on salary who just makes ice for cocktails. Real!

Hotel San Jose
1316 South Congress Ave | www.sanjosehotel.com
This popular hotel on S. Congress has an enclosed, well manicured courtyard garden area that is a great place to have cocktails and chill out when you need a dive bar break.

79 & 81 Rainey Street | www.bangersaustin.com
Banger’s is located in the heart of Austin on historic Rainey Street. They claim to have Texas’ largest selection of traditional and exotic housemade sausages (30 to be precise) and Austin’s largest tap system with 103 beers on tap. They have a great outdoor space and a nice chill vibe too. They also have a dog park on site and even make special sausages for dogs! Perfect for big groups and pups.

Yellow Jacket Social Club
1704 E 5th St | www.yellowjacketsocialclub.com
Great outdoor drinking spot with a nice beer list and cocktail menu. They also serve a good selection of small plates like meats and cheeses, sandwiches, salads and brunch options.

Cheers Shot Bar
416 E 6th St | No Website
The best place on 6th Street for Jagaerbombs, Jello shots, Mind Erasers, Flaming Doctor Peppers and anything in a test tube. Go here with a big group and get wasted!

House music has a legacy unlike any other genre of dance music. Born in Chicago in the ’80s, the style grew outward to Detroit, New York, the UK, Paris, South Africa, and all points in between, and, some 30 years later, it’s touched just about every aspect of popular music as we know it.
