Italian in Berlin

Whenever we travel, we write down the names of all our favorite restaurants we discover along the way and pass them along to friends when we return. We recently went to Berlin and realized that 4 out of the 6 places we had written down were Italian restaurants. The weather was warm and sunny and maybe all the walks along the river banks had us feeling a little Mediterranean, but other than beer and pretzels, I don’t think we ate anything German while we were there.  So here’s a short list of some of our favorite Italian spots in Berlin!

gorgonzolaclub innen Italian in Berlin

Gorgonzola Club

Gorgonzola Club is located in Kreuzberg and serves homemade pastas, pizzas, and desserts. The low light interior is shabby and rustic with large wooden tables and chairs and dark wood accents throughout. Although it’s normally busy, the vibe is still relaxed and cozy. A great place for a long meal of handmade gnocchi or ravioli with sage butter sauce and a couple bottles of wine.  http://www.gorgonzolaclub.de/

Il Casolare

Also located in Kreuzberg, Il Casolare is a casual cafe known for their handcrafted pizzas. With tons of outdoor seating, it’s best to go during the warmer months and sit outside and drink a beer while you wait for your pizza with fresh arugala, prosciutto and shaved parmesan. Il Casolare gets pretty busy at night, so try to go for lunch and after you eat,  you can take a nice stroll down the river bank.  No website.

Spaghetti Western

We walked right past this place and laughed at the name, but then doubled back to look at the menu. It’s a small relaxed spot that specializes in fresh, homemade pastas and Italian dishes in a bright sunny cafe atmosphere. They also serve fresh salads, antipasti and focaccia dishes. We had the spaghetti bolognese and a glass of white wine and we were set.  http://www.spaghettiwestern.de/

Hosteria La Buona Forchetta

Located on the busy blocks of Graefestrasse in Kreuzberg, Hosteria La Buona Forchetta is a little old world gem tucked in between some bigger, louder and more tourist centric spots. Inside, the place is decorated with dark wooden tables and shelves full of old photos and trinkets that gives it that charming grandma feel, but we opted to sit outside at one of the cozy candlelit tables.  We drank about 3 pitchers of the house red and had some of the best bucatini with pesto and eggplant we’ve ever eaten. We love this place!  http://www.hostaria-berlin.de/
