A Hudson Valley Weekender: Germantown, NY

A Hudson Valley Weekender: Germantown, NY

Located only about a 2-3 hour drive from the city and about 20 minutes south of Hudson, NY, Germantown is a quick escape from New York City. We headed up there for 4th of July weekend and rented a house with friends and spent a few lazy days chilling in our yard, hiking, swimming, and eating out, shopping or thinking about food.

Here’s a few easy tips to make the most out of your weekend!

High Falls Conservation Area

Easy and fun hike(s) along the Agawamuck Creek and a 200 foot waterfall. This is not a challenging hike, but it’s long enough to make you feel like you did “something”, plus there is a waterfall! Don’t get confused with the other “High Falls” swimming area that’s actually located in High Falls, NY—that’s over an hour away.

Twin Lakes

Laid back swimming hole with a floating dock. The “beach” is a rocky drive and a slightly overgrown hillside, and you don’t need more than a couple hours here, but the water is super cool and refreshing. Perfect for an easy dip! Plus you can park right there and jump in the lake. No hiking required.

Best place to eat in Germantown! Very Marlow/Diner vibes. They were sold out of the fried chicken and mac and cheese when we went, but the burger, sides, and salads we all shared were great. Great wine selection too.

Montgomery Place Orchards Farmstand

Farm fresh produce, eggs, jams, honey, local specialties. A little pricey, but they have good stuff. They are credited with “designing” the first farm stand to cater to the day trippers from NYC who would visit the Hudson Valley. Apparently, Eleanor Roosevelt loved the idea and helped spread the word about farm stands across America.

Eger Bros. Farm Stand

Cute, farm stand for all your fresh veggies for cheap!

Olde Hudson

Fancy groceries like speciality pickles, mustard, cheese, pasta and chocolates. My friend swears by their bacon.

Nice, big classic grocery store. Good place to stock on essentials for the weekend.
